The Balnji is a large semi-spherical basket-like enclosure made by weaving thin strips of bamboo with open spaces between them. Its open-weave construction allows air and light to pass through while creating a protective enclosure. Traditionally, it was used to cover and keep chickens and could also be used as a simple frame over which clothes could be spread for drying. The object reflects the practical use of locally available bamboo in traditional Kodava households.

Reason for decline: The use of Balnji declined with the introduction of modern poultry cages, wire mesh enclosures, plastic products and commercially manufactured household items. Changes in traditional household practices and reduced dependence on home-raised poultry also contributed to its decline.

Revival efforts: Balnji can be preserved and revived through continued use in traditional homes, Ainmanes, heritage demonstrations and cultural exhibitions. Documenting surviving examples and teaching traditional bamboo-weaving techniques to younger generations can help preserve the knowledge associated with making and using the Balnji.
