A Balnji is a large, semi-spherical bamboo enclosure traditionally handcrafted by the Kodava community using woven bamboo strips. Strong yet lightweight, it is designed with evenly spaced openings that allow air to circulate freely while providing protection to whatever is kept beneath it. The bamboo strips are typically about 1 cm wide and 0.5 cm thick, and the structure features a large opening at the top, making it easy to handle and move.

For generations, the Balnji has been an indispensable household item in Kodagu, reflecting the Kodava way of living in harmony with nature. Made entirely from natural bamboo, it is both eco-friendly and highly durable, requiring exceptional craftsmanship to weave the strips into a sturdy dome-shaped structure.

Uses

The Balnji served multiple practical purposes in traditional Kodava homes:

• Protecting poultry: It was commonly used to cover chickens, keeping them safe from predators while allowing adequate ventilation.
• Drying clothes: During the monsoon, a Balnji was placed over an Agistike (traditional earthen ember pot), and wet clothes were spread across it. The warm air rising through the bamboo weave helped dry clothes quickly, even during prolonged rainy weather.
• General household use: It was also used to protect grains, food items, and other household articles from animals while allowing air circulation.

Traditional Significance

The Balnji is a fine example of the ingenuity and sustainable lifestyle of the Kodava people. Crafted entirely from locally available bamboo, it demonstrates how natural materials were transformed into practical household tools that served multiple purposes. Although modern alternatives have largely replaced it, the Balnji remains an important symbol of Kodava craftsmanship, self-reliance, and traditional wisdom.
