Agistike

About

An Agistike is a traditional earthen container used to hold burning embers. It was an essential household item in Kodava homes, serving multiple practical and cultural purposes. Simple in design yet highly functional, the Agistike reflects the ingenuity of traditional Kodava living.

Uses

The Agistike was primarily used to keep rooms warm during the cold and rainy seasons of Kodagu. During the monsoon, it was often placed beneath a balnji(a wooden clothes rack) to help dry clothes efficiently.

Apart from providing warmth, the Agistike had several other uses:

  • Sharpening spearheads and metal tools
  • Baking and firing pottery
  • Providing heat during outdoor activities
  • Religious and ceremonial functions
  • Cooking and food preparation

Traditionally, these clay containers were filled with charcoal or other combustible materials and placed on dining tables, allowing meat and vegetables to be cooked or kept warm while serving.
