Thaliya

Thaliya (ತಳಿಯ) is the Kodava Thakk term for a plate, a vessel traditionally used for serving and eating food.

Description

A thaliya is generally a broad, flat vessel used to serve food. The form, size and material of plates have varied over time according to their purpose and availability.

Traditionally, household utensils in Kodagu were made from locally available or durable materials such as metal, bronze, brass, wood and later stainless steel. With changes in household practices and the introduction of modern utensils, porcelain, glass, plastic and other manufactured materials also became common.

The thaliya is used for serving meals and may be accompanied by other vessels used for individual dishes, curries, rice and accompaniments. In traditional Kodava households, food and the manner in which it was served formed an important part of everyday domestic life and hospitality.

Traditional and Modern Usage

The word thaliya continues to be used in Kodava Thakk to refer to a plate. The objects themselves, however, have changed considerably with changing lifestyles.

Earlier household utensils were generally durable and intended for repeated use. Today, stainless-steel, ceramic, glass and other modern plates are commonly found in Kodava homes, while disposable plates may be used at larger gatherings and functions.
