About the Okka
When the members of the okka were massacred by the Siddhis at Napoklu, a single life was spared by circumstance. A woman of the Gummatira lineage, married into the Koḍandera family, survived only because she was in her thamane at Kunda for childbirth at the time of the slaughter. She later gave birth to a son, Kariyanna, and together they became the sole survivors of the okka. Tradition holds that, in the aftermath of this tragedy, they sought land near the Gummatira ainmane. The British authorities are believed to have granted them land at Kunda, where the family was subsequently re established and rooted anew. As a mark of enduring respect and remembrance, and in recognition of this living history, the Koḍandera family continues to honour the Gummatira woman to this day during the meedi rituals at their ainmane.
