Cholle ಚೊಳ್ಳೆ
A Small Leaf Cup
Cholle is a small conical cup traditionally made from a leaf. Simple in form, it is shaped from natural material and has been used in ceremonial practices.
Made from What the Land Provided
Leaves readily available in the surrounding landscape were folded and shaped to create these small, temporary cups. Their simplicity reflects the traditional use of natural materials for everyday and ritual purposes.
A Place in Ritual
The Cholle continues to have a place in Kodava rituals even today. It is used at temples, Kainadas, and during ancestral offerings, including when Meedi is offered to the ancestors. Its presence in these practices connects a simple leaf vessel with acts of worship, remembrance and respect for the ancestors.
Simplicity and Resourcefulness
The Cholle reflects a way of life where natural materials were used thoughtfully and with little waste. What was needed could be made from what the land provided and, after use, returned naturally to the earth.
Heritage Note
The Cholle is more than a small cup. Its continued use in rituals shows how an everyday object can carry tradition across generations.
