The History of Vehicle Registration Numbers in Kodagu (Coorg)

Introduction

With the arrival of the British in Coorg, motor vehicles gradually began making their way into the region. As roads and transport facilities developed, cars and other vehicles became increasingly familiar. Kodavas too slowly began acquiring cars and motorcycles, with motorcycling gaining popularity after the Jawa motorcycle factory began production in Mysore in 1961. The registration marks used over the decades offer an interesting glimpse into Kodagu’s administrative and motoring history.

CG – The Early Coorg Registration Series

CG  represents the earliest registration identity associated with Coorg in the historical sequence presented here. It belongs to the period when Coorg had a separate administrative identity. Vehicles bearing this series are part of the region’s early motoring heritage.

MYW – Mysore State Registration Series

Following the integration of Kodagu with Mysore State, vehicles in the region came under the Mysore registration system. The MYW series was used for motor vehicles registered in Mysore State, including Coorg, until 1963. It represents an important phase in the transition from the earlier Coorg registration identity to the Mysore system.

MYZ – Subsequent Mysore Registration Series

MYZ followed the earlier MYW series and became another registration identity associated with vehicles in Kodagu. Old vehicles carrying MYZ registration plates are reminders of the period when Mysore State’s registration system continued to serve the region.

CNZ – Later Registration Series

CNZ was another registration series used in Kodagu from 1970s to  1990s .

KA-12 – The Karnataka Registration System

With the introduction of the Karnataka vehicle registration system, Kodagu came under the KA-12 registration code, administered by the Regional Transport Office at Madikeri. KA-12 continues to identify vehicles registered in the district.

KAVAAB series

With the introduction of new  vehicle registration system for Vintage & Classic cars , Kodagu  gets its series as KAVAAB follwed by its number
