Kodavas and Defence: A Legacy of Honour

For centuries, the Kodavas of Kodagu have upheld a distinguished martial tradition rooted in valour and loyalty. Long before the rise of any formal colonial army, Kodavas served in indigenous militias and later in organised forces such as the Mysore State Force, where they were known as the “Y Cadets.” This legacy continued through the historic Coorg Regiment, which formally carried Kodagu’s warrior identity into structured military service.

Over time, this tradition expanded into an enduring record of service. Kodavas have served with distinction in the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, participating in major global conflicts including the World Wars, and representing India in United Nations peacekeeping missions. Their commitment has also extended to police and paramilitary forces in defence of national security.

This heritage remains living and continuous, with multiple generations within Kodava families serving in uniform.
