Pattedara

Among Kodavas, whose traditions are deeply rooted in ancestor worship, the Pattadera is traditionally the eldest male member of the okka (clan). He serves as the custodian of the clan’s heritage, customs, and ancestral responsibilities. A list of Pattaderas, tracing the lineage from the Moolapurusha  (founding ancestor), is maintained to preserve the continuity of each Okka.

Traditionally, the ancestral property of the Okka was held in the name of the Pattadera, who represented the family in all matters relating to the Ainmane (ancestral home), religious ceremonies, and community affairs. He was entrusted with safeguarding the interests of the entire clan rather than acting as an individual owner.

Over time, with the partition of ancestral properties and as families began establishing separate households away from the Ainmane or Balyamane, the administrative role of the Pattadera gradually diminished. However, the position continues to hold immense cultural and emotional significance. Even today, the Pattadera is regarded with great respect as the symbolic head of the Okka, representing its lineage, unity, and ancestral legacy.
