Ambthotti (ಅಂಬ್ತೊಟ್ಟಿ)

Overview

Ambthotti is a traditional quiver used to carry arrows, associated with the hunting and martial traditions of the Kodavas of Kodagu.Designed to hold arrows securely and make them readily accessible, the Ambthotti formed part of the traditional equipment used by those who carried bows during hunting and other outdoor activities.

Traditional Use

The primary purpose of the Ambthotti was to store and carry arrows. Its design allowed a person to carry several arrows together while keeping their hands free to handle the bow.For hunters travelling through the forests and hilly terrain of Kodagu, carrying arrows safely and conveniently was an important practical requirement.

Design and Craftsmanship

Traditional quivers were made using materials suited to the local environment, including wood, leather, bamboo and other natural materials.

The construction was designed to protect the arrows from damage while allowing them to be removed when required. Depending on the period and maker, quivers could vary in size, shape and decorative detail.

Connection with Kodava Martial Traditions

The Ambthotti forms part of the wider material culture associated with the martial and hunting traditions of the Kodavas.

The bow and arrow were among the traditional weapons and hunting implements used in earlier times. Knowledge of handling such equipment was connected with the community’s familiarity with the forests and rugged landscape of Kodagu. The quiver therefore represents more than an accessory. It is part of the equipment associated with preparedness, skill and the traditional warrior culture of the community.

Heritage Significance

An Ambthotti preserved today provides a tangible link to the traditional hunting and martial practices of earlier Kodava generations. It also demonstrates the craftsmanship involved in creating practical equipment from locally available materials. As modern hunting practices and equipment have changed, traditional quivers such as the Ambthotti have become historical artefacts. Their preservation helps document an important aspect of Kodava material culture and martial heritage.

Museum Note

The Ambthotti is preserved as a traditional arrow quiver, representing the hunting equipment, craftsmanship and martial traditions associated with the Kodavas of Kodagu.
