Pulinje mara – Tamarind

Pulinje mara (Tamarindusindica L.) one of the native trees in Kodagu is a long-lived, medium-growth tree which grows up to 18 m tall.The crown has an irregular, vase-shaped outline of dense foliage. The tree grows well in full sun. It prefers clay, loam, sandy, and acidic soil types, with a high resistance to drought and aerosol salt.It has red and yellow elongated flowers.

Uses

The wood is extremely hard and strong, and resistant to termites. It is used for making agricultural implements and as a fuel wood. The fruit pulp is used in preparation of curries.
