Paradanda Okka
About the Okka
Paradanda Okka is based out of Naladi, Kakkabe which is about 35 Kms from Madikeri.
Ages ago, when Igguthappa, his two brothers and sister reached bank of Ambala River they were all very hungry. Their Sister Pannangalathamme was challenged to cook rice without fire. She got rice and milk from nearby Paradanda Okka and filled them inside a narrow tall container and buried it under hot sand on the river bed. By the time her brothers’ returned from their bath, the food was found to be cooked well. They went in search of Banana leaves to eat from. On the way they found a Banana grove of Paradanda Okka. When they tried to cut some banana leaves Ummava (Karanava Namboodari Muthu’s Wife) opposed it; angered by this gods cursed that no banana plant would survive in this land. When Muthu begged for forgiveness Igguthappa god agreed to forgive on one condition telling that they should become thakka at his shrine and should provide rice naivedya. Thus they have an Igguthappa temple near their ainmane and also they do not observe any pollution during the temple festivals.
Karanava Namboodhari Muthu is the deity of the Okka. They have around 500 acres of dry land and 1000 bhatti Bhoomi (Presented by King to Paradanda Diwan Ponnappa).
Paradanda Diwan Ponnappa who is also considered as the Karanava of the Okka was serving as a soldier in the army of Dodda Veerappa Raja and eventually became the chief in the army.
After the death of Ponappa the “Path Kut Murthis” which were under the control of Ponappa began to trouble people and king. To solve this problem, the king started looking for the survivors in the Paradanda Okka. Nandappa and Belliappa who were the Survivors from the Okka were hidden from their identity. Later on, these brothers Nandappa and Belliappa were brought back to Naladi and were given their lands back; they built Second Ainmane in this place.
Intermarriage
Paradanda Diwan Ponnappa’s eldest son Annayya settled in Kunjalgeri and took the Mukkattira ( kunjeri ) family name during their extinct. Hence they do not intermarry.
