Neeli Mara – Bishop wood

Neeli Mara (Bischofia javanica BI.) one of the native trees in Kodagu is a medium sized tree which grows up to

30 m tall. Outer bark is fissured and scaly with small, thick shaggy scales, reddish brown to purplish brown. Inner bark is fibrous, spongy, pink, exuding a red sap . Flowers are small greenish yellow to green and fruits are dark brown in colour.

Uses

Leaves are used as manure, wood is used for general construction(beam posts),bridges, decking, sleepers,mining props,flooring,interior finish,veneer,plywood,implements and carving. The plant has been shown to have antiuleer, anthelmintic and antidysentric activities.
