Mane kooduvo shastra
About
Kodava’s follow several rituals for different occasions, one among them is the “House warming Ceremony”. This is one of the unique culture practiced by the Kodava’s.
Custom
A day before the house warming, a cow and calf are tied inside the house (to ward off the evil) and next day morning the cow dung and gomuthra are cleared with bare hands, without using the broom. This ritual is practiced to cleanse the house. After this, the head of the family accompanied by a young girl with Thaliyathakki Bolcha, the lady of the house carrying a Sanduka, lady with a cradle (Thott Kunjye), lady with a basket of paddy, a young girl with a kindi, another lady with a basket of rice and one more lady carrying a pot of water, will go around the house thrice in a clockwise direction. After this procedure, the head of the family fires a gun shot and then enters the house followed by others and places all the things in the Nellakki Bade. This tradition marks good luck and prosperity. After all these procedures, Kavery theertha is sprinkled all over the house and thereafter lunch.
