The Darter is a distinctive waterbird found around freshwater habitats such as lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rivers and wetlands. It is an excellent swimmer and hunter, often seen moving quietly through the water with only its long, slender neck and head visible above the surface.

Identifying Features

• Long, slender neck and pointed bill
• Dark body with contrasting silvery-white markings
• Long tail and broad wings
• Often seen perched with its wings spread open to dry
• Swims with much of its body submerged, giving it its characteristic “snakebird” appearance

Feeding & Behaviour

The Darter is primarily a fish-eater. It dives underwater and pursues fish and other aquatic prey using its sharp, pointed bill. Unlike many waterbirds, its plumage is not highly waterproof, which helps it dive efficiently; it therefore frequently emerges from the water and spreads its wings to dry.

Habitat in Kodagu

Of all the Birds of  Kodagu, Darters can be associated with rivers, lakes, reservoirs, ponds and other freshwater wetlands. Healthy aquatic habitats provide the fish, shelter and nesting sites they need.
