Chonira okka
About the okka
Chonira okka’s ancestor Chonira Chermaṇa was a spy in the service of Doḍḍa Viraraja. He was caught by Tipu’s army, tortured and killed.
When waging a war against an invading Nair army from Kerala, the Kodagu Raja’s army pitched tents and camped in Hudikeri, and the Chonira okka fed the army for three days. The Raja was pleased and sent for the Chonira pattedara and asked him what he wanted as a gift. The pattedara told the king that members of the Chonira okka were finding it difficult to do itti bitti chakri – mandatory unpaid labour as a guard, soldier, or any other work required by the King. He requested that members of his okka be exempted from such labour. The King agreed, and decreed that members of the Chonira okka would be exempted from itti bitti chakri.
