Chemeen Curry

Chemeen is a delicious Kodava  recipe served as a Curry or fry which is common during monsoon season.

Ingredients

  1. Chemeen-Prawn/shrimp – 1kg
  2. Onion -2(chopped)
  3. Ginger fresh-2 inches
  4. Garlic – 10 pods
  5. Green chillies -4
  6. Coriander powder- 2tsp
  7. Jeera powder-1/2 tsp
  8. Red chillies- 10
  9. Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
  10. Tomato -1
  11. Salt
  12. Pinch of sugar
  13. Lime or Kachimpulli
  14. Coconut milk-250ml
  15. A few Cashewnuts
  16. Oil

Method

  1. Grind ginger and garlic to a fine paste.
  2. Marinate the Chemeen with salt and turmeric and leave it aside for ½ an hour.
  3. Fry red chilies, half of the chopped onion, chopped tomato, cashew nuts and grind to a paste.
  4. Heat a little oil in a pan and add the other half of the onions, curry leaves and fry till it turns golden brown.
  5. Add the ginger garlic paste, ground mixture and cook for a few minutes.
  6. Add coriander powder, jeera powder, and green chillies and let it cook till the oil comes out. Then add the coconut milk, pinch of sugar, Chemeen and add a little water and let it cook for about 15 minutes.
  7. After the Chemeen is cooked add kachimpuli and let it boil for a few minutes and turn off the heat.

Best enjoyed with rice and Akki ooti
