About the Okka

When their karaṇava settled in Nangala, the okka name was changed from Naḍuvattira to Buttianḍa. The name Buttianḍa is believed to have been derived from Buttathammé, the Devi who once had a shrine in the area, and after whom Buttangala itself is said to have received its name.

Their karaṇava, Naḍuvattira Kalayya, arrived in Nangala with his two brothers. The three later quarrelled over the vast extent of land they had acquired at Theral. It was agreed that whoever ploughed the land first would claim ownership. Kalayya’s younger brother went there during the night and ploughed the field before dawn, securing the land even before Kalayya arrived the next morning.

Kalayya’s brother subsequently built an ainmané not far from the temple of their family deity Kannika Parameshwari, also known as Karnammé. The Buttianḍa okka today has two ainmanés serving the entire lineage: the  mund mané at Nangala, and the second ancestral house at Theral.

Intermarriage

The third brother fought alongside Kalayya and later moved to Kambeeranḍa in Nangala, where only one elderly woman survived, all the men of that okka having perished. He performed mannk nindiya there and became the ancestor of the Kambeeranḍa okka. As a result of this shared origin, there are no inter-marriages between the Buttianḍa and Kambeeranḍa okkas.

The two branches, Nangala and Theral, trace their lineage to the common ancestor Kalayya. While they conduct  karanang koḍpa separately in their respective ainmanes, members from both branches participate in each other’s ceremonies. The two branches also come together at Theral to jointly celebrate the festival of their family deity, Kannika Parameshwari.
