Buttianda Okka

About the Okka

Their karaṇava changed their okka name from Naḍuvattira to Buttianḍa,  when he came to Nangala. Buttianḍa was derived from Buttathamme, the Devi to whom there was a shrine in the past, and after whom Buttangala got its name

Their karanava Naḍuvattira Kalayya was probably a Gouḍa, who came to Nangala with his two brothers. The three brothers quarelled over the vast amount of land that they got in Theral . It was decided that whoever ploughed the land in Theral first would get that land. Kalayya’s younger brother went there overnight and claimed the land by ploughing it first, even before Kalayya reached there the next morning.

Kalayya’s brother built an ainmané, not far from the temple to their family deity Kannika Parameshwari (also called Karnammé). The Buttianḍa okka has two ainmanés for the whole okka, the first one is the mund mané in Nangala, and the second one is this othe pore in Theral.

Intermarriage

The third brother also fought with Kalayya, and went away to Kambeeranḍa in Nangala where there was only one old lady left (all the men had died). He mannk nindiya there and became Kambeeranḍa. Hence, there are no inter-marriages between the Buttianḍa and Kambeeranḍa okkas.

The two branches (Nangala and Theral)have a common ancestor Kalayya, they conduct separate karanang koḍpa in each ainmane and members from both branches of the okka join in the ceremonies. The two branches also get together in Theral for their family deity Kannika Parameshwari’s festival.
