Biddanda Okka

About the Okka

There are about 450 members (about 150 oles) in the three bhagas together. They used to be the changolas at the Bhagavathi (Povvedi) temple. There are three Biddanḍa bhagas with three ainmanes – this one in Kokeri is the oldest, the original arvaḍ of the Biddanḍa okka; the others are in Bavali and Balamberi. The bhagas do not observe mutual pole thale (pollution rites), nor do they celebrate any festivals together. Each bhaga has its own karanava and separate karanang kodpa. All the three bhagas now join for playing hockey, and have a joint team for the annual Inter-okka Hockey tournament. The Biddanḍa okka is believed to have been a large one, dating back to about three centuries ago.Their earliest remembered ancestor (muula purusha of the okka) Bopayya, is considered the karanava of this bhaga.

Karayakara Diwan Bopu (Bopanna), from nine generations ago, is considered as the karanava of the Bāvali Biddanḍa bhaga

Thimmayya (Diwan Bopu’s half-brother) who moved to Balamberi in 1818, after purchasing this property from the Pebbatanḍa okka is the karanava of this okka
