Athakunge
Athakunge (Elaeocarpus serratus L.) is one of the native trees of Kodagu, known for its graceful form and ecological value. This large evergreen tree can grow up to 18 metres tall, standing as a dignified presence in the forests and sacred groves of the region. Its bark is brownish and smooth, lending the trunk a polished appearance that catches the soft light filtering through the canopy.
Athakunge bears glossy green leaves and small, delicate flowers that later develop into bluish-green, oval fruits. These fruits are sometimes used locally for traditional remedies and pickling, reflecting the Kodava people’s deep knowledge of their natural surroundings. Found in both wild and cultivated areas, the tree contributes to the rich biodiversity of Kodagu’s landscape, offering shade, food for birds, and ecological balance.
Revered as part of the region’s native flora, Athakunge stands as a quiet symbol of Kodagu’s living heritage — where every tree, leaf, and grove holds a story woven into the land’s enduring bond with nature.
