Armanamada Okka

About the Okka

Armanamada okka’s ancestors served the Raja in his aramane so they were called Aramanemaḍa which became Aramaṇamaḍa over time. The Raja was pleased with the service rendered to him by their karanava who worked in the Kaggoḍ panya (fertile land belonging to the Raja, in Kaggoḍ),and gifted him 2000 bhatti bhumi of Kommaḍ panya. There are three panyas in Kodagu: Kaggoḍ, Kommaḍ and Kutta panyas.

It is said that when Tipu came this way on his way from Periyapatna to Kerala to fight the British, he left the Kannambaḍi muḍip that he had brought with him. Lingaraja used to stay in the ainmane (this was his panya), and his grain was stored here. He built the PooỊe kere.

This branch includes those living in Besagoor, Kottagēri and Karmaḍ, for whom this is the ainmane. There is another Aramaṇamāḍa branch which is not related to this branch. It includes those living in Bēgoor, Dēvanoor and BaỊele. They have no ainmane but have karanang kodpa at their karana there in Begoor.

It is said that, in the past, there were tunnels leading from the ainmane to the river bed. In the past, the three okkas Aramaṇamāḍa, Paruvangaḍa and Kokkalemaḍa lived in an ur guppe in Pommaḍ (where the Moond okka ambala is located).
