Batti (ಬಟ್ಟಿ)

Batti is a large traditional basket or deep pan woven from bamboo, cane, or reed. Traditionally, the surface was sometimes coated with cow dung, which helped strengthen the material, improve durability, and protect it from pests.

Batti was commonly used in Kodava households for storing, carrying, drying, and handling agricultural produce, particularly grains and other farm produce during harvesting and processing.

Traditional Use

Batti served as a versatile agricultural and household implement. It was used for carrying, drying, sorting, and storing grains and other agricultural produce. Its large size and sturdy woven construction made it particularly useful during harvest and post-harvest activities.

Why It Became Rare

The traditional use of Batti declined with the introduction of plastic, metal, and commercially manufactured storage containers. Changes in agricultural practices and household lifestyles further reduced the need for large woven baskets. The decline of traditional bamboo and reed craftsmanship also meant that fewer artisans continued making them.

Today, Batti is rarely seen in everyday use and survives mainly as a reminder of traditional Kodava agricultural life, craftsmanship, and the resourceful use of locally available natural materials.
