Nadikerianda Bheemaiah-Indian Army

Subedar Nadikerianda Bheemaiah was born on 1st July, 1920 in Kodagu. He was the first Kodava to receive the Vir Chakra award on 21 Nov 1947 during the Kashmir war when a column of 25 vehicles conveying the rear details of 161 Brigade was attacked in surprise by the enemy at the Uri-Poonch Road.

N. Bheemaiah being in charge of nine vehicles used his brilliance to move his men safely to the rear of the column when the road was continuously under enemy fire during the war. He barged through the firing and collected ammunition for his men and made sure that his troops were not short of ammunition. He then collected all the wounded men left on the road, rendered first aid to them and proceeded with them up the hill where he organised his men into positions. As a Junior Commissioned officer he was saluted by the Nation for his brave and courageous act and honored him with ‘Vir Chakra‘ in the year 1947.
