Iychettira Okka

About the Okka

Iychettira Okka’s ainmane is located in Mythadi village and there are about 200 families in this okka.

Intermarriage

Iychettira – Ballachanda

Uthu Nayaka (brought up by Dodda Veera Raja, 1687-1736) set fire to the old ainmane which was a little further up, to the south-west of the current one, wanting to destroy the whole okka because they were against him. One hot summer day, his soldiers locked the doors to the house from the outside and set fire to the thatched roof. There were 18 ‘babies in cradle’ then. Only two baby boys, Appayya and Poovanna who were thrown out through windows were saved by servants who took them to the Ballachanda okka where they were brought up. Hence there is no intermarriage between the Ballachanda and Iychettira okkas.

Appayya became a Diwan in the Raja’s court.

Appayya, eldest son of Iychettira Biddayya impressed Siribai Dodda Viraraja, and was appointed Subedar to administer Puthur. When the Raja went for a hunt near Puthur, a plot to kill him failed with the shot just missing him. The Raja, who was told that Appayya was responsible for the plot, asked for his head. Appayya escaped the guards who came to arrest him, went on horseback to the palace at Madikeri and swore his innocence. The Raja asked him to pick a gold ring from a cauldron of boiling oil to prove his innocence. Appayya prayed to goddess Pudiyodi and by her grace he got the ring out, unhurt. In memory of this miracle, Appayya vowed to install Pudiyodi as the deity of the Iychettira okka and hold a Pudiyodi theare every five years in their ainmane.

A lady of this okka took revenge on a chieftain who had killed her five brothers, and decapitated him. After that, when she went to the Bhagavathi temple, goddess Bhagavathi was horrified. She shut the door to the temple and refused to come out. Thereafter this Iychettira lady was worshipped as Pudiya Devi (new goddess) or Pudiyodi. Hence the theare held in her honour.

Iychettira – Bachettira

For some reasons, the Paleyagaras burnt the thatched ainmane of Bachettira Okka which was in Kadanga Murur. Everyone was killed in this incident except one ajja who had gone for hunting. To take revenge, this ajja killed 8 of the Nayaka’s Okka, but later he was killed in the encounter. Only one girl from the Okka who was married to Iychettira Okkacame back to her son and started this Okka again. Hence there is no intermarriage between Bachettira and Iychettira Okkas.
