Traditional Earthen Water Pot

Gujaayee (ಗುಜಾಯೀ) is a traditional earthen water pot used to store drinking water in Kodava households.Made from clay and fired to create a strong, porous vessel, the Gujaayee was an essential part of everyday household life. Earthen pots were valued not only for storing water but also for their natural ability to keep water pleasantly cool.

Before modern refrigerators and water-storage containers became common, vessels like the Gujaayee provided a simple and effective way of storing drinking water. The pot would often occupy a familiar place in the household, making cool drinking water readily available throughout the day.

Cultural Significance

The Gujaayee represents the simplicity and practicality of traditional Kodava household life. Made from earth and shaped by skilled hands, it reflects the close relationship between people, local materials and everyday needs.

It is a humble object, but one that speaks of an earlier way of living—where household objects were durable, functional and often made from materials found close to home.
