Apparanda Okka

About the Okka

Apparanda okka‘s ainmane was built by Apparanḍa  Bopu Diwan and his elder brother Appayya. Apparanḍa Diwan Bopanna (Bopu), great-grandson of karanava Kuttanna, was the last Diwan under the Kodagu Rajas, during the time of Chikka Veeraraja. He continued as Diwan under British rule. Apparanda  ainmane was built by Apparanḍa  Bopu Diwan and his elder brother Appayya.

Around 1820, Diwan Bopu got the Igguthappa temple, including its sanctum sanctorum, renovated with tiles and bricks. The temple had mud walls, and rafters made of bamboo until then. Diwan Bopu’s son Apparanḍa Mandanna, who was the Asst. Commissioner of Coorg during British rule, arranged for the temple to be brought under the jurisdiction of the Mujrai Department of the Government in 1908 and improved its administration.

Apparanḍa Bopanna (Diwan Bopu’s son) is believed to have been the first Kodava to start a coffee estate in Koḍagu in 1868, after estates were started by the Britishers around 1854. Bopanna had his private house built in the 1860s at the foot of the ThaḍiyanḍamoỊ peak, near Kakkabe. The house is now a home-stay called Palace Estate, and is managed by the fifth generation of descendants of Diwan Bopu.
