Gallantry Awards are honours bestowed upon individuals who display exceptional courage, valour, and dignity in the service of the nation. In India, these prestigious decorations are conferred upon members of the Armed Forces, paramilitary forces, and at times even civilians who demonstrate remarkable bravery, often while facing grave danger. The history of gallantry is woven into ideals of heroism, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to duty \u2014 qualities that continue to inspire respect and admiration across generations.<\/p>\n

Instituted after India\u2019s independence, these awards reflect the nation\u2019s gratitude toward those who risk their lives to safeguard others and uphold peace. Gallantry Awards<\/a> are announced twice each year \u2014 on Republic Day (26 January) and Independence Day (15 August). Among the highest military honours are the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra,<\/a> awarded for extraordinary courage and leadership, particularly in times of war.<\/p>\n

Many Kodavas, descendants of a long and proud warrior tradition, have been recipients of these distinguished gallantry honours. Their valour, discipline, and service have brought immense pride not only to Kodagu but to the nation as a whole. Kodava officers serving in the Army, Navy, and Air Force have earned some of India\u2019s highest wartime decorations, including the Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra, further affirming the community\u2019s exceptional contribution to national security.<\/p>\n

Maha Vir Chakra<\/h1>\n

About<\/h2>\n

The Maha Vir Chakra is the second highest military decoration, given to the act of braveness performed during war. It can be awarded to anyone from the services who shows exceptional act of valor in the face of enemy. More than 155 acts of bravery and selfless courage have been recognized since the inception of the medal. <\/p>\n

    This is also awarded for bravery in the battleground. It is third in preference after the Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra. It is also given to anyone from the services that have performed an act of valour and sacrifice in the face of enemy.<\/p>\n

    Established by the President of India on 26 January 1950 (with effect from 15 August 1947). The statutes were amended 12 January 1952 to readjust the order of wearing as new decorations were established.<\/p>\n

      Initially called as the “Ashoka Chakra, Class III” by the President of India, The statutes were revised and the decoration renamed  as Shaurya Chakra are recognized by a bar to the medal ribbon (to date five have been awarded)<\/span><\/p>\n
