It is an important ceremonial object in Kodava culture and holds a place of honour during weddings and other auspicious occasions. Though simple in appearance, the Kindi symbolizes purity, blessings, gratitude, and the continuity of family traditions. Now mostly made of silver

The distinctive spout allows a small quantity of liquid to be poured with precision, making it ideal for ceremonial rituals. In Kodava households, the Kindi is carefully preserved and brought out during important family functions, especially weddings.

Uses

The Kindi is primarily used during the Kodava Mangala (wedding ceremony).

Fresh milk is poured into the vessel and placed on a Thaliyathakki Bolcha, which rests on each of the two Mukkalis (traditional three-legged stools) positioned before the bride and groom. During the ceremony, the bride and groom sip a few drops of the milk from the Kindi as part of the traditional wedding rituals.

Beyond weddings, the Kindi is also used during religious ceremonies and other auspicious family occasions for offering milk, water, honey or other sacred liquids.

Significance During Kodava Weddings

One of the most meaningful rituals associated with the Kindi is known as “Paal Thanth Chaknaingala Mariyethi.”

During this ceremony, elders from both families bless the bride and groom by gently offering them a few drops of milk from the Kindi. The ritual carries a profound message of gratitude and respect.

It reminds the newlyweds that while they begin a new chapter together and build their own family, they must never forget the parents and elders who lovingly nurtured, protected, and cared for them from childhood. The milk symbolizes the nourishment, sacrifice, and unconditional love they received while growing up.

This beautiful tradition reinforces the Kodava values of gratitude, respect for elders, family unity, and lifelong responsibility.

Cultural Importance

The Kindi is much more than a ceremonial vessel—it is a symbol of purity, blessings, and the enduring bond between generations.
