About the Okka<\/h2>\n

The Muruvanda Okka has a history associated with the conflicts during the period of Tipu Sultan and the subsequent preservation of the okka<\/em> through the female line.<\/p>\n

According to the recorded tradition, all the men of the Okka <\/a>were captured and killed by Tipu Sultan’s soldiers. The only surviving male member of the okka<\/em> later died in a tiger attack while he had gone to cut bothh<\/a>\u00a0(Bothh Kuthuvo<\/em>) for Kaveri Sankramana.<\/p>\n

Following his death, his last daughter was married to a man from the Muruvanda Okka, who adopted the Jammada<\/a> manepedha and continued the okka<\/em>. This tradition is cited as the reason that there is no intermarriage<\/a> between the Jammada and Muruvanda okkas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Thakkame<\/h2>\n

The Muruvanda Okka holds thakkame<\/em> rights for the Ayyappa Temple and the Poluvappa Temple.<\/p>\n

The Poluvappa Temple was traditionally regarded as the ur devasthana, or village temple.<\/p>\n

Stories and Traditions of the Okka<\/h2>\n

Revival of the Okka<\/h3>\n

One recorded tradition states that when the members of the Muruvanda okka<\/em> were killed by Lingaraja, a woman who had married into the okka<\/em> was away at her thamane<\/em> for childbirth and therefore escaped the slaughter.<\/p>\n

Her son, Karanava Muddayya, subsequently revived the okka<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Conflict with the S\u014dmayanda Paleyagara<\/h3>\n

According to tradition, an ancestor of the okka<\/em> fought with the S\u014dmayanda Paleyagara to retain the land.<\/p>\n

Remains associated with the house of the S\u014dmayanda Paleyagara\u2014including foundations and a stone trough for horses\u2014are said to remain visible on the route from the Muruvanda area towards the Kelappanda Ainmane.<\/p>\n

Origin and Land Records<\/h3>\n

The okka<\/em> is believed to have come to the area from Hos\u016br.<\/p>\n

A document dated 1852, issued by the British Government, is recorded as granting the family jamma<\/em> and umbali<\/em> land in Kolathod, as well as jamma<\/em> land in Hos\u016br.<\/p>\n
