The okka is one of the Kodava lineages whose history, ancestral traditions and religious responsibilities have been preserved through oral accounts and family traditions.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/kodava-ainmanes\/\">ainmane<\/a> of the Konganda Okka is at Rudraguppe. Over time, the okka developed into six bh\u0101gas, with members establishing houses in different parts of Kodagu. Although these branches became geographically dispersed, they continued to maintain important links with the principal okka and traditionally returned to Rudraguppe for ancestral ceremonies, particularly K\u0101ra\u1e47ang Ko\u1e0dp\u0101.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Origin of the Name<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>According to the traditional account preserved by the Konganda Okka, the lineage originated with Govindayya, who is regarded as the Moolapuru\u1e63a and <a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/karona-moolapurasha\/\">karanava<\/a> of the okka.Govindayya is described as a Mukk\u0101ti, a person associated with swinging lamps in a temple. He married a woman named K\u0101\u1e37amma from the Kong\u0101\u1e37va lineage. Their descendants came to be known as Konganda.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional account connects the name of the okka with the Kong\u0101\u1e37va lineage. The Kong\u0101\u1e37va rulers are recorded in KodavaClan&#8217;s documentation as having ruled parts of Kodagu as vassals under the Chola and Hoysala dynasties, approximately between 1004 and 1175.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0His marriage to K\u0101\u1e37amma, a Kong\u0101\u1e37va woman, established the lineage that subsequently became known as Konganda.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/karona-moolapurasha\/\">Moolapurusha<\/a><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Govindayya<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Six Bh\u0101gas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Konganda Okka is traditionally divided into <\/span>six bh\u0101gas, or branches.<\/p>\n<p>The main ancestral house is at Rudraguppe, while other branches established ancestral houses, known traditionally as Ajja Kettna Mane, in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Madikeri<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kandanga\u1e37a<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mayamudi<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>G\u014d\u1e0di<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>B\u0101\u1e47e B\u0113l<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ogg\u00e9<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These Bhagas\u00a0 houses do not possess separate Kaimadas. Instead, members of the different bh\u0101gas return to the principal Konganda ancestral centre at Rudraguppe for K\u0101ra\u1e47ang Ko\u1e0dp\u0101.<\/p>\n<p>This arrangement illustrates how an okka could become geographically dispersed while retaining a common ancestral and ritual centre.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/karona-moolapurasha\/\">karanava<\/a> and Ancestral Tradition<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The principal Konganda <a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/karona-moolapurasha\/\">karanava<\/a> is located in front of the ancestral house at Rudraguppe.<\/li>\n<li>The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/guru-kaarana-kodpo-padathi\/\">Karanang kodpa<\/a> is performed regularly<\/li>\n<li>Before a wedding in the okka, on the morning of the \u016ar K\u014d\u1e0duva day, offerings of chicken and pig are traditionally made to the Karanava at the Kaimada. This ceremony is known as Kaimadak Ko\u1e0dp\u0101.<\/li>\n<li>Offerings are also made to Kaly\u0101tan\u1e0da Ajjappa at his <i>sth\u0101na<\/i> near the Chandura Ainmane.<\/li>\n<li>The bamboo harvested from the area is traditionally used to construct the frame of the Kudr\u00e9 for Parana Namm\u00e9.This is an example of the continuing relationship between local natural resources and traditional festival practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Thakkame<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Konganda Okka holds the <\/span><strong>Bhandara Thakka of the J\u014d\u1e0d Bhagavathi Temple<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> for B\u0113ra\u1e37i N<\/strong>\u0101\u1e0d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Relationship with the Kokkera Okka<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most notable traditions associated with the Konganda Okka concerns its historical relationship with the <\/span>Kokkera Okka.<\/p>\n<p>According to the oral account, the Konganda Karanava and the Kokkera Karanava were close friends.At one point, the Konganda Karanava is said to have left for Piriyapatna because of difficulties caused by the Bo\u1e37\u1e37a\u1e0dichan\u1e0da Karanava.The Kokkera Karanava intervened and successfully persuaded him to return to his ancestral home.<\/p>\n<p>In remembrance of this relationship, the Konganda and Kokkera okkas traditionally exchange an E\u1e0de during K\u0101ra\u1e47ang Ko\u1e0dp\u0101<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.The Konganda Okka offers an E\u1e0de to the Kokkera Karanava, while the Kokkera Okka reciprocates by offering an E\u1e0de to the Konganda Karanava.The tradition represents an enduring relationship between two Kodava lineages and demonstrates how historical alliances could become incorporated into ritual practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Aruva Okka<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Chandura Okka<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Mand<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Konganda Okka is associated with the <\/span>Kandanga\u1e37a N\u0101\u1e0d Mand for B\u0113ra\u1e37i N\u0101\u1e0d.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/deeva-kadu\/\"><em>Deva Kaad<\/em><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Konganda Okka is associated with <\/span>\u016ar Ayyappa K\u0101\u1e0d in Koo\u1e0da\u1e47a K\u0113ri<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where an Ayyappa stana is located.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thutengala<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span>Thutengala<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or traditional cremation ground, is located near the Konganda ancestral settlement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Eminent Members<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/army-personnel\/\">Army<\/a><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Konganda M.
