He had served in the army between 1951 and 1989. Lt Gen B C Nanda was born on&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #111111; background: white;\">May 12, 1931.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Family<\/h2>\n<h3>Father<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/biddanda\/\">Biddanda<\/a> S. Chengappa<\/p>\n<h3>Mother<\/h3>\n<p>Biddanda&nbsp;Bollavva<\/p>\n<h2>Education<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">After completing his primary schooling in Madikeri, B C Nanda moved to Madras and later to Dehradun for his higher education. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">He also did his higher education in Royal College of Defense in London.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Career<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>He almost single-handedly saved the Siachen Glacier the world\u2019s highest theatre of battlefield from losing to a very determined Pakistan Army in 1987.<\/li>\n<li style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"color: #111111; background: white;\">He served as the Army Commander, Northern Command.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Achievement<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>General Nanda headed the Mercara Downs Golf Club and was also&nbsp;the chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/kodava-hockey-festival\/\">Biddanda Hockey Festival.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"color: #111111; background: white;\">General Nanda headed the Kodagu Natural Sciences Society which was set up to trace the origin of Kodavas by ascertaining the ancestry, customs, culture, language and a study of genealogy by the Kodagu Natural Sciences Research Society.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Awards<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; background: white; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"color: #111111; background: white;\">For his contribution to India\u2019s military might, Lt. Gen. Nanda was honoured with Param Visishist Seva Medal (PVSM) and Athi Visishist Seva Medal (AVSM)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Lt Gen (Retd) B.C.
