The history of the Pattada Okka<\/a> is intertwined with family traditions, ancestral relationships and the historical events that shaped Kodagu. Its origin story recalls a period of upheaval during the campaigns of Tipu Sultan, when families and communities across the region are said to have experienced destruction and displacement.<\/p>\n

The origin of Pattada Okka<\/h3>\n

According to family tradition, the land associated with the Pattada Okka originally belonged to a Brahmin family. During an attack attributed to Tipu Sultan\u2019s soldiers, the family was killed and its temple destroyed. One girl is said to have survived the tragedy.<\/p>\n

An Achappanda man subsequently married the surviving girl through the customary practice known as mannk nindiya<\/em>, meaning settling on land associated with another family. Through this union, the lineage and identity associated with the Pattada name are said to have continued.<\/p>\n

Another account suggests that an Achappanda man purchased the land belonging to the Brahmin family and established the Okka there. The family eventually came to be known as Pattada, adopting the mane peda<\/em>, or family name, associated with the settlement.<\/p>\n

These accounts form part of the family’s remembered history and reflect the importance of oral tradition in preserving the origins of Kodava families.<\/p>\n

Connection with Achappan\u1e0da<\/a> Okka<\/h3>\n

The Pattada Okka retains a significant ancestral connection with the Achappanda Okka of Peggala. The family tradition identifies its karanava<\/em>, or founding ancestral figure, as belonging to the Achappanda Okka.<\/p>\n

The two Okkas share a kaimada<\/em>, the ancestral shrine associated with the remembrance and veneration of forebears. This shared ancestry also explains the traditional restriction against intermarriage between the two families.<\/p>\n

Such relationships demonstrate how the Kodava Okka system preserves connections across generations. A family’s identity is defined not merely by its name, but also by its ancestry, customary obligations, sacred places and relationships with other Okkas.<\/p>\n

Moolapurusha <\/a>and Ainmane<\/h2>\n

The moolapurusha<\/em>, or founding ancestor, of the Pattada Okka is identified as Appayya.<\/p>\n

The ancestral home, or ainmane<\/em>, represents the family’s enduring connection with its forebears and collective identity. In Kodava tradition, an ainmane is more than a dwelling. It is a place where family members gather, maintain ancestral customs and preserve the memory of earlier generations.<\/p>\n

Along with the kaimada, it forms an important part of the cultural and spiritual life of an Okka, connecting present generations with those who came before them.<\/p>\n

Members of the Pattada Okka have contributed to various fields, including the armed forces, education and photography. Among those associated with the family are Captain Pattada K. Deepak Cariappa, Colonel Pattada N. Thimmaiah and Group Captain Pattada M.
