About the Okka<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

When their kara\u1e47ava<\/a> <\/em>settled in Nangala, the okka<\/em> name was changed from Na\u1e0duvattira<\/a> <\/em>to Buttian\u1e0da. The name Buttian\u1e0da<\/em> is believed to have been derived from Buttathamm\u00e9, the Devi who once had a shrine in the area, and after whom Buttangala itself is said to have received its name.<\/p>\n

Their kara\u1e47ava<\/em>, Na\u1e0duvattira Kalayya, arrived in Nangala with his two brothers. The three later quarrelled over the vast extent of land they had acquired at Theral. It was agreed that whoever ploughed<\/a> <\/em>the land first would claim ownership. Kalayya\u2019s younger brother went there during the night and ploughed the field before dawn, securing the land even before Kalayya arrived the next morning.<\/p>\n

Kalayya\u2019s brother subsequently built an ainman\u00e9<\/em> not far from the temple<\/a> of their family deity Kannika Parameshwari, also known as Karnamm\u00e9. The Buttian\u1e0da okka today has two ainman\u00e9s<\/em> serving the entire lineage: the  mund man\u00e9<\/a> <\/em>at Nangala, and the second ancestral house at Theral.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Intermarriage<\/a><\/h2>\n

The third brother fought alongside Kalayya and later moved to Kambeeran\u1e0da in Nangala, where only one elderly woman survived, all the men of that okka<\/a> <\/em>having perished. He performed mannk nindiya<\/em> there and became the ancestor of the Kambeeran\u1e0da okka. As a result of this shared origin, there are no inter-marriages<\/a> between the Buttian\u1e0da and Kambeeran\u1e0da okkas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The two branches, Nangala and Theral, trace their lineage to the common ancestor Kalayya. While they conduct  karanang ko\u1e0dpa<\/a> <\/em>separately in their respective ainmanes<\/em>, members from both branches participate in each other\u2019s ceremonies. The two branches also come together at Theral to jointly celebrate the festival of their family deity, Kannika Parameshwari.<\/p>\n
