Ballachanda Ainmane<\/b><\/h1>\n

The ainmane is a traditional Mund Mane<\/a><\/em><\/span> and is regarded as the original ancestral house of the Ballachanda <\/a>Okka<\/a><\/em>. The present structure is more than 200 years old and has undergone renovation while retaining several traditional architectural and ritual features.<\/span><\/p>\n

Location<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Ballachanda Ainmane is situated at <\/span>Kadanga-Murur<\/b>, approximately 2.5 km from the Kadanga\u2013Kakotparambu road.<\/span><\/p>\n

Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Ballachanda Ainmane is a <\/span>Mund Mane<\/b>, characterised by a central courtyard or <\/span>mund<\/span><\/i>. A bridge over a causeway leads to the entrance of the house, which is a large tiled-roof structure with a gateway.<\/span><\/p>\n

The house faces <\/span>east<\/b> and contains approximately <\/span>14 rooms, including the kitchen<\/b>. The pillars surrounding the mund are made of stone and are painted cream. The main doorway has intricate traditional wood carving, while the verandah contains a simple barred window.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>nellakki<\/span><\/i>, the central sacred space of the ainmane, contains a wooden <\/span>bhasma kutt<\/b> used to preserve sacred ash associated with the Baithurappa temple. A small triangular <\/span>gud<\/span><\/i> is used for the sacred lamp.The flooring includes granite and marble steps, modern tiles in parts of the verandah and ceramic tiles in the passage and Kanni Kombare<\/em><\/a>,<\/span>. The mund and passage leading to the kitchen retain black stone paving, while some other rooms traditionally have cow-dung-washed mud floors.<\/span><\/p>\n

The roof was tiled approximately 150 years ago. The present ainmane was renovated around <\/span>2003<\/b>, while retaining the essential character of the original structure. The road to the left of the ainmane<\/a> has a tomb of Ballachanda Ponnappa<\/em> with a tank to the right side.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kaimada and Sacred Features<\/b><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>kaimada<\/b> is located to the left of the approach to the ainmane. It contains a simple <\/span>gudi<\/span><\/i> with a bell-metal lamp.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ainmane has <\/span>three kall botis<\/b>. One is situated in the front yard, another within the kaimada enclosure and the third near the entrance to the <\/span>kala<\/span><\/i>. The front kall boti has a carved <\/span>basava<\/b> figure.<\/span><\/p>\n

A deva kaad<\/a> associated with the Okka is located nearby and is recorded as covering approximately <\/span>40 acres<\/b>,<\/span><\/p>\n
