Kakkada<\/strong>, the fourth month of the Kodava year, extends from mid-July to mid-August<\/strong>, and Padinett<\/strong> refers to its eighteenth day, which generally falls on 2nd or 3rd August<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For generations, Kodavas have observed Kakkada Padinett by preparing and consuming traditional dishes made from the medicinal herb Madd Thoppu<\/strong><\/a> (Justicia wynaadensis<\/em>). The day marks the close relationship between the Kodava community, nature, and the seasonal medicinal plants of the Western Ghats.<\/p>\n

Madd Thoppu<\/a>(Justicia wynaadensis<\/em>) is a medicinal herb that grows naturally in Kodagu during the monsoon. According to Kodava tradition, the plant reaches its highest medicinal potency on Kakkada Padinett<\/strong>. It is believed that the leaves possess eighteen medicinal properties<\/strong>, symbolically associated with the eighteenth day of the month, and emit a distinctive fragrance that is noticeable only on this day.<\/p>\n

The freshly harvested leaves and tender stems are boiled to produce a deep bluish-purple aromatic extract. This extract is traditionally believed to help maintain body warmth, improve immunity, and support overall health during the rainy season.<\/p>\n
