Rooms and covered spaces are arranged around the mund, allowing light and air to enter the interior of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entrance generally leads into a verandah and then into the central area of the house. Traditional houses may contain stone pillars, wooden beams, carved doorframes, raised platforms and long wooden seats known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aimara<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principal sacred and social space is the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/nellakki-nadubade\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nellakki Nadubaade<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generally located within the main part of the house. Rituals honouring the ancestors are performed at the ancestral home, particularly during ceremonies connected with family and agricultural traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Relationship with<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/kodava-ainmanes\/\"> <b>ainmanes<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The terms <\/span><b>Mund Mane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/kodava-ainmanes\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ainmanes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are related but do not mean exactly the same thing.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/kodava-ainmanes\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ainmanes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> broadly refers to the ancestral house of an okka. <\/span><b>Mund Mane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes a particular architectural form of ainmane characterised by a central open courtyard.Thus, a Mund Mane can be an ainmane, while not every ainmane is necessarily a Mund Mane.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Construction and Materials<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional Mund Manes were constructed using locally available materials and traditional building techniques.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common materials included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timber<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clay and mud<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Country tiles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laterite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lime and other traditional finishes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy wooden beams supported the roof structure, while stone was commonly used for foundations, pillars, steps and courtyards.Traditional floors were often made of packed earth or mud treated with cow dung. Over time, many houses have been modified with cement, concrete, ceramic tiles and other modern materials.Roofs were traditionally constructed with timber and covered with country tiles. Many existing houses have had their roofs replaced or retiled over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Wood Carving<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wood carving is an important feature of many<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/kodava-ainmanes\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ainmanes<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doorframes, windows, pillars and roof elements may contain geometric designs, floral patterns and other decorative motifs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The extent of ornamentation varies considerably between houses.
