The locality is situated in the foothill and plantation landscape of the Western Ghats, where settlements, agricultural lands, streams, forest patches and sacred spaces have historically formed an interconnected cultural landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The geographical significance of Peggala is important when considering the name Peggala Sarthav. In traditional Kodagu religious practice, guardian spirits were often closely associated with a particular place, settlement, landscape feature or Sthana. The name of a guardian could therefore preserve a connection to the locality with which its worship was historically associated.<\/p>\n<h4>Geographic and cultural setting<\/h4>\n<p>Peggala\/Heggala is part of the wider southern Kodagu landscape, characterised by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hilly and undulating terrain associated with the Western Ghats<\/li>\n<li>Coffee and other plantation agriculture<\/li>\n<li>Paddy-growing areas in suitable valleys and low-lying land<\/li>\n<li>Streams and seasonal watercourses<\/li>\n<li>Forest patches and traditionally protected sacred spaces<\/li>\n<li>Villages and dispersed settlements connected by traditional pathways<\/li>\n<li>Sacred sites associated with local guardian deities and ancestral traditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This landscape is significant because traditional guardian-spirit worship in Kodagu was generally not separated from the physical environment. Sthanas could occur in or near settlements, groves, trees, water sources, boundary areas or other places considered spiritually significant.<\/p>\n<h3>Peggala and the Sarthav tradition<\/h3>\n<p>Within this geographical context, Peggala Sarthav represents a local expression of the broader Sarthav\/Sarthavu guardian tradition. The geographical association is particularly relevant because the name <em>Peggala<\/em> may preserve a connection between the guardian tradition and the locality.<\/p>\n<p>It would, however, be inappropriate to assume that every tradition associated with Heggala\/Peggala automatically belongs to Peggala Sarthav. The specific mythology, ritual practices and community associations of Peggala Sarthav need to be distinguished from the wider religious history of the locality.<\/p>\n<h3>The importance of place<\/h3>\n<p>Traditional Kodagu religious geography often connected a deity or guardian spirit with a defined physical location.
