Balamuri School<\/h2>\n

The Balamuri School was established in 1954 through the efforts of several village elders, including Kongiranda Uthappa, Kotera Somanna, Palandira Devayya and Bollachettira Muthanna.The school was established initially as a community-supported school, with the villagers taking responsibility for creating educational facilities for children in the area.<\/p>\n

Land Contribution\"\"<\/h3>\n

The Kotera family donated approximately 2.5 acres of land for the construction of the school.<\/p>\n

An additional contribution was made for the school’s playground. Bollachettira Kushalappa, in consultation with Kotera Kuttayya, arranged for approximately half an acre of additional land to be made available to the school.<\/p>\n

The land contributions enabled the school to have both a permanent campus and adequate space for recreational activities.<\/p>\n

Role of the Village Community<\/h3>\n

The school buildings and classrooms were constructed with the support of the local villagers. The community also established scholarship support for students.<\/p>\n

Kotera Muthanna served as the president of the school committee from the establishment of the school until the institution was taken over by the Government.<\/p>\n

The school subsequently became a government institution.<\/p>\n

A Community School<\/h3>\n

According to accounts of former students, the school was once a vibrant centre of education in the village. Student numbers were high and classrooms were often filled beyond the available seating capacity.<\/p>\n

Children from different economic backgrounds studied together without distinction between rich and poor. The school is remembered by former students as a true community institution and a centre of learning for the village.<\/p>\n

Changing Circumstances<\/h3>\n

In recent decades, the increasing preference for English-medium education has affected enrolment in many government schools, including schools in rural Kodagu.<\/p>\n

The Balamuri School has experienced a significant decline in student numbers compared with its earlier years. While the school building can be maintained and renovated, the continuation of a school ultimately depends on the presence of students.<\/p>\n

The history of Balamuri School therefore also raises a wider question about the preservation of the educational institutions created through the efforts and sacrifices of earlier generations.<\/p>\n

Legacy<\/h3>\n

The establishment of Balamuri School in 1954 represents an example of community-led education in Kodagu. The contribution of land by the Kotera family, the additional land made available for the playground, the construction of classrooms by villagers and the establishment of scholarships demonstrate the collective responsibility taken by the community towards education.<\/p>\n

The school stands as a reminder of a period when villagers, families and local elders came together to create educational opportunities for their children.<\/p>\n

The story also highlights the importance of preserving not only the physical buildings of historic village schools but also the memory of the people whose land, labour and resources made them possible.<\/p>\n
