Kuppanda Okka<\/b><\/h1>\n

Origin of the Kuppanda Okka<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Kuppanda Okka is a Kodava patrilineal clan traditionally associated with Nangala in Kodagu, Karnataka. Like other Kodava okkas, the Kuppanda Okka historically functioned as a joint family and social institution centred on a common ancestry, shared property, ancestral worship and collective responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ancestral home, of the Kuppanda-1 branch is the Kuppanda Ainmane<\/a> at Nangala, but the identity of the Kuppanda Okka extends far beyond the ancestral house. Over generations, the okka developed several branches, established new settlements and <\/span>ainmanes<\/span><\/i>, and maintained its connections through genealogy, rituals and family institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Origin of the Kuppanda Okka<\/b><\/h2>\n

The origin of the name Kuppanda is traditionally connected with the land on which an early ancestor settled.<\/span><\/p>\n

A man belonging to the Kenjangada lineage, from the area near Kandanga\u1e37a, married the daughter through the traditional practice known as <\/span>mannk nindiya<\/span><\/i>, in which a man becomes part of his wife’s family.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fields associated with the family came to be known as Kuppanda Bel, and the descendants subsequently became known as Kuppanda.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kenjangada Connection<\/b><\/h2>\n

Another important tradition concerning the origin of the Kuppanda Okka connects the family with the Kenjangada lineage.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the family genealogy recorded a Kenjangada man named Madiya (Madayya) became closely associated with the Kuppanda Okka during the period of the political upheavals in Kodagu and Mysore in the late eighteenth century.<\/span><\/p>\n

The family record states that Madiya was among those taken to Srirangapatna as a prisoner in 1790 during the campaigns of Tipu Sultan.<\/span><\/p>\n

While in Srirangapatna, Madiya married Ammavva, the widow of a Kuppanda man who had died during captivity. Ammavva belonged to the Chottera lineage and had a child from her deceased Kuppanda husband.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the death of Tipu Sultan and the subsequent political changes, Madiya and Ammavva returned to Nangala in 1792, bringing the child with them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Madiya subsequently became the Karanava of the Kuppanda Okka.<\/span><\/p>\n

Branches of the Kuppanda Okka<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Kuppanda Okka is traditionally divided into three principal branches.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kuppanda-1<\/span><\/h4>\n

Kuppanda-1 is the principal branch associated with the ancestral settlement at Nangala.<\/span>The branch continues to maintain its ancestral connection with the Kuppanda Ainmane and the associated ritual traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kuppanda-2<\/span><\/h4>\n

The second branch is known as Panyath Mane Kuppanda.<\/span>This branch established its own ancestral house at Kaikeri.<\/span>Despite developing as a separate branch, Kuppanda-2 traditionally maintained a close relationship with Kuppanda-1. The recorded family tradition notes that there was no Theek\u00e9\/Pol\u00e9 between the two branches and that members continued to participate together in social and community activities.<\/span>The relationship between the branches illustrates the way an okka could expand geographically while retaining a shared ancestral identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The third branch, Kuppanda-3, became associated with Virajpet Badaga.<\/span>According to the recorded family tradition, this branch was once particularly prosperous and controlled a substantial extent of agricultural land, estimated in the family record at approximately 1,000 bhattis.<\/span>The Kuppanda Karanava was traditionally associated with this branch and was said to have resided there while overseeing the family’s property.<\/span>Although the original large ancestral house at Virajpet Badaga no longer survives, the branch continues to form part of the wider Kuppanda genealogy.<\/span><\/p>\n
