It marked his transition from childhood to adulthood and signified that he was ready to assume greater responsibilities within the family, \u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em>, and the community.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was traditionally held at the family&#8217;s Ainmane (ancestral house) or Mandh, in the presence of family members, elders, and relatives. On this occasion, the young man was ceremonially presented with his own Odikathi, the traditional Kodava side-knife. Receiving the Odikathi symbolized his acceptance into adulthood and his readiness to uphold the customs, traditions, and responsibilities of his Okka.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the ceremony, the <em>Balekara<\/em> traditionally demonstrated his strength, courage, and readiness for adulthood by chopping a banana stump with his newly received <a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/odi-kathi\/\">Odikathi<\/a>. This symbolic act represented his physical capability, self-confidence, and preparedness to shoulder the responsibilities of protecting and supporting his family and community.<\/p>\n<p>From this day onward, he was regarded as a<em> Balekara<\/em> (young adult). As a <em>Balekara<\/em>, he was expected to gradually set aside the carefree nature of childhood and assume increasing responsibilities towards his family, ancestral property, and community. He was encouraged to participate actively in household affairs, agriculture, ceremonies, festivals, and the welfare of the Okka, preparing himself for the responsibilities he would carry throughout his adult life.<\/p>\n<p>Although the practice has largely faded over time, Bale Mangala remains an important part of Kodava cultural heritage, reflecting the community&#8217;s recognition of adulthood as a gradual transition accompanied by responsibility, discipline, courage, and service to the family and the \u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bale Mangala Bale Mangala was a traditional Kodava ceremony observed when a boy attained adulthood.
