Such situations often arose following wars, epidemics, accidents, or other tragic circumstances that resulted in the loss of the male members of an Okka. Historical accounts from the Mysore campaigns of the late eighteenth century also record instances where entire groups of men belonging to certain Okkas were killed, captured, deported, or forcibly converted, leaving only women to continue the family line.<\/p>\n<p>When an unmarried daughter or widow was the only surviving member of an <em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em>, a suitable man from another <em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em> was invited to marry her under the custom of Kuthik Nippo. Upon marriage, he became a member of his wife&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em>, adopted her clan name, and assumed the responsibility of preserving its lineage, ancestral house (<em>Ainmane<\/em>), family property, customs, and religious obligations. The children born from the marriage also belonged to the mother&#8217;s Okka, ensuring the uninterrupted continuation of the clan.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kodava customary practice, the descendants of the man who entered the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em> through Kuthik Nippo continued to belong to the wife&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em>. Traditionally, marital alliances were avoided between the man&#8217;s original <em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em> and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/okka\/\">Okka<\/a><\/em> into which he had entered through Kuthik Nippo, thereby maintaining clear clan relationships and preventing future <a href=\"https:\/\/kodavaclan.com\/kodaguheritage\/intermarriages-between-the-okkas\/\">inter-clan marriages between the two Okkas.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kuthik Nippo reflects the importance the Kodava community placed on preserving every Okka, its identity, ancestry, and traditions.
