These balls could be dried and then ignited, producing a visible flame and smoke that could serve as a signal over a distance.

How Pondhi Was Prepared

In earlier times, when commercially available cooking oils were not easily accessible, people living in the forested regions of Kodagu traditionally extracted oil from locally available seeds.

Among the seeds used for oil extraction were:

Kaadi seeds

Povvali seeds

Panapuli seeds (Garcinia gummi-gutta)

Castor seeds

After the oil was extracted, a solid residue known as an oil cake remained.

Instead of discarding this residue, it was shaped into compact balls and left to dry thoroughly in the sunlight.

These dried balls were known locally as Pondhi.

Pondhi as a Means of Communication

Once dried, the Pondhi balls could be set alight to produce a strong flame and smoke.

In a time when people lived in scattered settlements and communication over distance was difficult, such signals provided a practical way of attracting the attention of neighbours.

According to the traditional account, Pondhi was used particularly to communicate the death of a family member to neighbouring households.

A fire signal could be seen from a distance, while the firing of a gun could provide an audible indication that something significant had occurred.

The community would understand the significance of the signal and pass the information from one household to another.

More Than a Fireball

The story of Pondhi offers an insight into everyday life in old Kodagu, when communities often depended on locally available materials, traditional knowledge and collective understanding.

The practice also demonstrates how nothing was necessarily wasted. Seeds were first used for extracting oil, while the remaining oil cakes were repurposed as fuel and communication signals.

The Panapuli seed, in particular, has another important connection with Kodava culinary tradition. Its fruit is used to prepare Kachampuli, the distinctive souring agent of Kodagu cuisine, while its seed oil was traditionally associated with the preparation of Pondhi.

A Forgotten Form of Communication

Today, a telephone call or message can travel across Kodagu in seconds. In earlier generations, however, communicating news between scattered homes required ingenuity.

A fire in the distance, a plume of smoke, or the sound of a gun could carry a message.

Pondhi is therefore remembered not simply as a traditional fireball, but as part of an older system of community communication and social organisation in Kodagu.

Such practices are valuable fragments of oral and material heritage, offering a glimpse into how earlier generations lived, communicated and responded collectively to important events.

Before messages travelled through wires and networks, they travelled through sound, smoke and fire.

Pondhi – The Traditional Fire Signal of Kodagu Pondhi was a traditional Kodava method of communicating important news across neighbouring settlements.
