Uppo – Ploughing
About
Ploughing, a crucial component of the “Aipani,” represents one of the five essential tasks conducted in paddy fields during the rainy season. This farming practice involves the systematic loosening of the soil to create an optimal environment for seed sowing . Traditionally performed during the monsoon, ploughing is instrumental in preparing the land for cultivation, breaking up compacted soil, and enhancing aeration. The diligent execution of this process ensures a fertile and receptive bed for seeds, contributing significantly to successful crop growth and a bountiful harvest in the agricultural cycle.
Type of work
This agricultural practice involves the cutting and overturning of the soil to bring fresh nutrients to the surface while facilitating the breakdown of remnants from previous crops. Additionally, it enhances the soil’s capacity to retain moisture. In ancient times, this process relied on animals like cattle or horses, and today it is mechanized, often performed with tractors. The origins of this practice harken back to the early days of agriculture, where digging sticks, hoes, and mattocks were the primary tools employed for the same purpose. Over time, technological advancements have transformed the methods, yet the fundamental objective remains soil enrichment and preparation for planting.
