Theare
Theare
“Theare” is an ancient ritual form of worship, performed by a person belonging to a particular caste.
Ritual
They dress up for the role and are possessed by a revered ancestor or deity and dances in a trance on the day when offerings are made to ancestors or on the day of the festival of the deity.
This is done in order to attain wishes of the departed ancestor. Karana theare is annually celebrated in the month of April/May by Kodava Families. Seven theares are held throughout the night and other three early in the morning.
