Early life and background

Career

National Level

Between 1985 and 1991, he represented the  in various state-level tournaments for Karnataka State hockey team

In 1992, he was selected for the inaugural batch of the Air India Hockey Academy in Delhi.

He later played for Mahindra & Mahindra, Mumbai, for three years.

International career

Jagadish represented India at the senior international level for approximately seven years. His international appearances included participation in major tournaments such as the 1998 Men’s Hockey World Cup.

He was part of the Indian team that won a medal at the 1997 Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup

He was the member of the winning squad at the 1998 Pre-Asian Games tournament.

Olympic selection

Jagadish was in contention for selection to the Indian team for the 2000 Summer Olympics. However, he did not make the final squad.

Awards and recognition

In 1998, Jagadish Ponnappa received the Best Goalkeeper Award at an international tournament in Germany, becoming the first Indian hockey player to receive this honour.

Playing style

Known for his physical presence and defensive awareness, Jagadish was recognised for his quick reflexes, composure under pressure, and control within the shooting circle. He played a key role in India’s defensive performances against leading international teams including Australia, Pakistan, and Russia.

Post-retirement

Following his retirement from international hockey, Jagadish served as coach of the senior and junior Karnataka state hockey teams. Alongside his sporting career, he was employed with Indian Airlines as Deputy Manager from 1997 to 2016 and continued to play for the airline team, winning the All India Senior National Championship on three occasions.
