Karanava Achu Ajja (also known as Achayya or Achuvaṇṇa) was friendly with Doḍḍa Veeraraja. When Doḍḍa Veerarāja was imprisoned with his family in Piriyapatṇa by Tipu Sultan, Achu Ajja was one of the 12 leaders from Koḍagu who helped Doḍḍa Veeraraja and his family escape from the prison in 1789. The king rewarded Achu Ajja and the others who helped in the escape with land.
