About

Born in Scotland of India, Kodagu, Kakamada Uthappa  also fondly known as Karna, grew up to become the first kodava man to enter the line of diamond cutting, trading and jewellery way back in 1972. Back in those days, apart from being a coffee grower, joining the armed forces was widely sort after by Kodava men. It was during this time, that Kakamada Uthappa choose the path less travelled and completely unheard of at the time…. The Diamond Industry.

Career 

He moved to Surat in 1972 to join the diamond industry and spent a few years learning how to create beautiful flawless diamonds from rough carbon. The skill of how to cut a diamond, polish it and purify it from rough, was all learnt on the job by him. This real time experience is the reason behind providing diamonds of only superior quality to his clients, even till date. Being a subject matter expert in the field of diamonds, picking out a brilliant diamond from any given lot, is all in a days job for him.

In 1976, he took along with him 40 kodava youngsters from Kodagu to Surat and got them trained in the field of diamond cutting. Their travel and accommodation was free and they were provided livelihoods earning almost INR 2000 – 2500, back in those years.

He also set up the first diamond cutting and polishing factory in Kodagu (Gonikoppal) in the year 1988. Kodava youngsters were employed and the manufactured diamonds were exported from Kodagu.

In the year 1989,he relocated from Mumbai to Bangalore and extended his portfolio of business and started his own line of jewellery in gold, diamonds, precious and semi- precious stones called             “ Precious Jewellers”. His clientele is almost 80% kodavas who swear by the quality of diamonds and craftsmanship of his work.

The Kaliyanda family Hockey Cup hosted in the year 2003, had the very famous Kaliyanda Gold Cups for both winners and runners, made by Kakamada Uthappa (Propreitor – Precious Jewellers).

 His desire to give back to our community is channelized through his commitment to social and community work. He has served as :

  • Begur Kodava Sangha, Bangalore – President
  • Jayanagar Kodava Sangha, Bangalore – Vice President
