Codava Makkada Coota

Codava Makkada Coota

Codava Makkada Coota an Orgainisation for the kodavas was born for the preservation and growth of the Kodava traditions, culture, language, arts, dance and other practises among the Kodava children. The Coota(organisation) works for Kodavame, the Kodava way of life.

Founded in:

18th February 2013

Founder team:

During these six years so far, a 15-day workshop has been conducted annually for Kodava children in Kodagu. These children are given the Pattole Palame and a Codava Makkada Coota’s publication, the ‘Aat Paat‘ (Dance-and-song) book. Beside these activities, the organisation has been responsible for naming prominent roads in Kodagu after Konganda Ganapathy, Haradasa Appacha Kavi, philanthropist Koravanda Nanjappa and freedom fighter Pandyanda Belliappa, who is called Kodagu’s Gandhi. The Codava Makkada Coota has also constructed the Squadron Leader Ajjamada Devaiah circle in front of the Madikeri bus stand, commemorates his memory every year and has coordinated the construction of his six-and-a-half foot tall bronze state made in Kengeri to be erected on the circle. Currently, the organisation has obtained permission to erect Squadron Leader Ajjamada Devaiah’s statue in Madikeri and the work is in progress. Codava Makkada Coota is also striving, at the DC office, towards the preservation of the Kodava martial community’s right to keep arms.

Besides all this work, the Coota organises an “Ummath-Bolak” dance-and-song competition between several okka(Kodava joint families) at the Crystal Court with the purpose of preserving the Kodava culture. In order to encourage Kodava children to embrace the Kodava folk culture the Codava Makkada Coota and the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Akademi have organised the “Kunjiyada Kodava Janapada Sanskritika Namme” at Ponnampet in 2015, Napoklu in 2016 and Madikeri’s General Thimmayya Public School in 2017. The fifth Kunjiyada Namme was held in Roots School in T. Shettigeri on 6th January 2020. The Coota also honours Kodava achievers.

The Coota also organised many ‘thand-bendu‘ matrimonial alliances. Since the past seven years, on every Edmyaar Ondh(Kodava New Year) the Coota members yoke oxen and plough paddy fields in order to celebrate the agricultural festival.

The efforts of the Codava Makkada Coota in the preservation of the Kodava thakk (language), culture and arts are reaping results. Children who participate in the debates and discussions in the Kodava thakk and in programmes that teach the Kodava dances and songs organised by the Codava Makkada Coota are given copies of the Kodava holy book, the Pattole Palame, as prizes. The Coota has been involved in various related cultural competitions in Kodava thakk being held across villages for both children and adults.

All the cultural programmes organised by the Codava Makkada Coota has gained the support of the general public. In the future as well, the Coota wishes that this public support will continue. We seek Mother Kaveramma’s and Guru Igguthappa’s blessings.
