Chiriyappanḍa okka

About the Okka

The Chiriyappanḍa okka was originally in Kirgoor in an oor guppe with three or four other okkas. There were quarrels between the Chiriyappanḍa ajjas and four of them left and set up their own ainmanes about 100 years ago – in Kanoor, Balaji, Niḍugumbe (Baḷele), and Nalkeri. Now only the original one in Kirgoor and this one in Kanoor (which is separate from the other 4 bhagas) remain. However, the Kirgoor one now belongs to one bhaga there and it is no longer an ainmane – no one goes there for any festival or functon. All the other four bhagas, except this branch in Kanoor, get together only for karanang kodpa in Kirgoor.

Many years ago, there was a difference of opinion between members of this branch, and they stopped celebrating karanang kodpa for some years. Later, they started celebrating it in one of their houses. Even that had stopped, but was revived around 2000 when the kaimadas were renovated.
