Cheppudira Subbaiah Poonacha a famous Kodava sportsperson is an International Hockey player who was born on 18th August 1965 in Ponnampet Kodagu. He started playing hockey at a very young age and was recognized by PB Harish for his outstanding talent. A talented full-back he represented India in several games and was praised for his excellent performance all over the world

Education

  • Did his schooling in Ponnampet Govt High school -1980
  • Completed his PU from Govt Junior College Ponnampet-1983
  • Graduated from St Joseph’s College, Bangalore -1986

Career

  • From 1984 to 86 he was trained in DYSS Sports hostel and from 86 to 89 he played for SAI Sports. In 1986 he attended the All India University Camp in Punjab. He was encouraged and motivated by his seniors to play hard and to take up hockey as a career

Achievements

  • He represented Bangalore University for 2 yrs and won All India Inter-University -1985-1986
  • He represented Indian University for German Tour in 1986. In 1989 as a member of Indian Hockey team in the fourth nation Tournament in Barcelona, Spain he won a Silver Medal
  • In 1990 he toured Europe and played against Germany. He played against Holland and Malaysia in the same year. He also won a silver medal in pre-Olympics in New Zealand
  • He represented Karnataka state Hockey team for 14 years and was the captain for 5 years
  • He represented India in Russia test series in Moscow in 1991
  • Represented Indian Hockey team for Sultan Azlan Shah International tournament in Ipon (Malaysia) in 1991 and won Gold Medal
  • Represented Indian Hockey team for Pre Olympics at Auckland in 1991 and won Silver Medal
  • Represented Indian Hockey team for Bangkok Asian Games in 1990
  • Represented Indian Hockey team for Barcelona Olympics in 1992 in Spain
  • He represented India 50 times in various International tournaments and scored 10 goals wearing Jersey No 2
  • Represented KSHA Hockey coaching course in Bangalore in 2000
  • Represented FIH Hockey coaching course in Afro Asian Games Hyderabad in 2003
  • He also served as a coach for the Karnataka Hockey Team
